Add RAM to overclocked rig?
|

| goony goo goo Registered Member #31Joined: Sat Nov 04 2006, 12:30AM Posts: 1585 | I have a rig with the CPU overclocked by 50%, I had to increase the voltage on the RAM to remove memtest errors. I have 2x1GB 800mhz Geil Dual Ultra
Recently I bought the same exact set of RAM, and am thinking of adding it.
I guess it's obvious that there is a high chance the current RAM voltage might not be sufficient and I'm gonna get memtest errors, or the system might not start at all.
My question is, should I add it to the current OC settings and test it by eventually increasing voltage? Or should I reset the settings and OC the hole thing from the start?
Thanks.

| it's more difficult to overclock with 4 sticks of ram than it is with 2 sticks. You may need to increase the voltage of the north bridge to get a more stable overclock, what speed is your ram running at? I suggest that you don't increase the voltage over that recommended by the manufacturer as they are quite sensitive. If you're overclocking 800MHz it may be best to sell the 4 sticks and instead get 2 x 2gb of 1066 mhz.

| I've set the CPU:DRAM ratio to 1:1 , and currently it's at 533.
The voltages are: CPU core voltage - 1.3750 DDR2 voltage - 2.00 MCH 1.25v Voltage - 1.35 ICHIO 1.5v Voltage - 1.50
I think the voltage range for the RAM is 1.8 - 2.3
I can't buy anything with speeds higher than 800mhz because my mobo wont take it, it's an abit ab9 pro. I know, it's an old rig

| that's fine then, your ram is running at 1066mhz and it's well within the recommended voltage. like i said you may need to bump up the nb voltage for 4 sticks of ram

| do not run your ram at 1:1 try a different multiplier/ratio which will take the mem out of the equation. as Proffy said 2 sticks are more desirable than 4. Most mobo's do not like 4 sticks at any speed.

| Thanks for the advice guys.
I just wanted more RAM and not lose my current OC setup, cause my win7 seems to lag when huge apps are on and uses too much virtual memory.
I'll try with the 4 sticks, if something gets fried, then I'll get a new rig, this one's 3 years old
I looked at the prices here (PL) and I can get a i7 920, Asus P6T SE, Corsair xms3 2x2GB 1600mhz for around 450 quid.

| Hi Baraka,
Do you really need 4Go Ram? It is normaly reserved to 64Bits OS.
See you around

| I knew you would know about it...damn it! =]
I am sorry, I cannot help you since I have no skills with overclocking and voltage issues. I hope you will find the solution.
